Prayer Flags

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrint

Traditional prayer flags come in many  themes and colors. Most prayer flag sets contain five symbolic colors such as; Blue- Longevity Flag, White- Purification Flag, Red- Wishfufilling Flag, Green- Tara Flag, and Yellow- Wind Horse Flag. There are many different types of prayer flags which have animals and mantras printed on them. In the symbolism of the prayer flag, the wind horse represents the process of the wind carrying prayers as do the four animals in the corners of the flag. The wind horse carries the wish-fulfilling jewel of enlightenment. At the top is a symbolic representation of the Buddha's first teaching at Deer Park. The text inscribes the mantras of many deities: Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani, Amitabha, Amitayus, Padmasambhava, The Peaceful Deities, the Wrathful Deities, Tara, Vajrakilaya, and Vajrasattva. Prayer flags are also reminders of impermanence as they fade in the sun, and fray in the wind.
